People who don’t bother switching their energy suppliers can pay up to £200 more every year – the cost of a weekend away or almost six times the average weekly shop for one person.
The bad news is that millions of us are sticking with expensive deals and big bills to keep our houses warm. So why are we wasting cash on energy bills and not taking steps to cut them?
One explanation is that customers aren’t confident. A YouGov poll found that 33% of people didn’t feel they knew enough to select the right tariff or supplier for them. Data from the energy regulator Ofgem reveals an even higher percentage of people, 42%, aren’t confident comparing the different energy deals available.
But there is some good news. Hundreds of pounds worth of savings can be made by switching to a cheaper tariff and this is where we come in with our fantastic new Energy Club where you can make savings of up to £300 with a 30 second switch. And these amazing savings aren’t just for now, they are for the long term. It’s a really simple and fast process so click here if you want to really want to cut down your energy bills.
And there has never been a better time to make changes and save money. With more of us working from home during the pandemic our energy bills have soared. According to data from Energy Helpline, employees no longer working from the office could see their personal energy bills rocket to a total of £1.9billion nationwide, due to the increased use of heating and lighting.
It found that working from home for five days a week would add £107.18 to the average winter bill. This means the bill will total £536.29 for the days at home when compared to £171.64 spent for evening and weekend usage.
Altogether, the 2020/21 winter bill comes to a total of £707.93 – 17.8% more than the average winter dual fuel bill the previous year. Energy prices are also sky high and from April 1, wholesale energy prices have pushed up the price cap by £96 to £1,138 to pre-pandemic levels.
However, the energy cap only applies to the 11 million customers who are on a prepayment meter or a standard variable tariff (SVT), which is a provider’s most expensive tariff. The new price cap means these SVTs are currently £200 more expensive than fixed energy plans.
