PIKESVILLE, Md. (WJZ) –– Three people were injured after a gas explosion in Pikesville Friday afternoon. Construction crews were on the scene at the time of the explosion.

Neighbors said they could feel their homes shake from the explosion.

“Very scary because they’ve been working on the gas lines for a few days so I’m assuming it has something to do with gas, which really scares me,” said one neighbor.

The fire burned for about 3 years before crews were able to put it out.

Baltimore Gas and Electric crews are still on the scene. Electricity was shut off and gas is out for about 250 homes according to officials.

A statement from BGE reads:

“BGE crews were performing work on a steel gas main when the fire began. One employee was taken to the hospital for medical treatment, and another employee was treated at the scene. BGE crews remain onsite assisting the fire department and ensuring the area is safe. In order to safely perform this work, gas service may be suspended to approximately 200 customers while the repair work is underway. The process of restoring gas service to these customers will begin once repairs are completed.”

One man remains in critical condition at Johns Hopkins Bayview. Two others were also injured but refused treatment on the scene. Authorities confirmed only the construction workers working on the gas line were injured.

Multiple homes were evacuated as precaution.

Chopper 13 was over the scene Friday afternoon. You could see flames shooting out from the roadway at Stevenson Road and Janellen Drive.

Stevenson Road is currently blocked off. Drivers are told to avoid the area.
