Beauty Secrets Behind This Year’s Most Stunning Looks At The Golden Globes
Awards season unites individuals across generations, fields of interests and industries. It is more than just a venue for honoring remarkable talent in entertainment. It is a stage where the creative world as a whole is immortalized. Winners join the very elite circle of greats. Creation by designers become a style reference. The same goes for hair and makeup looks.
My favorite people in the publishing world are film and literature enthusiasts. Their conversations surrounding awards season are, at least to my ears, highly academic to a point where it can sometimes be intimidating. They are the types who can give an accurate summary of a nominee’s body of work, including remarkable performances and those that were lack luster. While I love a good film or original series on Netflix, my reasons for waking up early (I’m watching from Manila) to catch the Golden Globes are slightly different.
I hold my breath for the glamorous looks and new fashion statements on the red carpet. When I watch red carpet coverage, I create a list of my favorite looks. As soon as nominees are announced, my first instinct is to try and guess which designers my favorites will wear. What makeup looks and hair styles will they don? And finally, who will emerge as the belle of the ball?
This year’s Golden Globes was extra special in that it took audiences away from a life of lockdown and sweatpants. Truth is, we are all eager to dress up again and put on makeup without having to worry about smearing it underneath a mask. Just the same, many a beauty enthusiast will agree that it would be nice to one day get coiffed again and paint the town red. With the promise of better days ahead, these beauty secrets from celebrity makeup artists and stylists will inspire us to make the world our very own (home) red carpet.
BRETT FREEDMAN USES BIOGRAPHY FOR JODIE FOSTER
Although the general mood this year was glamour, Jodie Foster, who won for her role in The Mauritanian, accepted her Golden Globe in a pair of pajamas. Correction: The Golden Globe winner wore Prada silk pajamas. So I guess in that respect, she was still glamour.
From a fashion standpoint, you have to be a seasoned and highly esteemed actress to wear nonchalance while every else tries to out glam each other. It’s as if to tell the world: “I have nothing to prove.” That’s what makes women like Jodie inimitable, formidable and absolutely iconic.
To complement the award-winning-actress-ready-for-bed look, makeup artist Brett Freedman created a look that’s polished but well-hydrated. He says, “What’s my secret weapon to give matte foundations a touch more hydration? I add a couple drops of BIOGRAPHY‘s Active Oil to my foundation brush before swirling on base. For Jodie I used the slightly luminous BIOGRAPHY Golden Ray Glow Drops. This trick is great if you want to take your current favorite matte foundation and give it a little hydrating lift.”
He also emphasized Jodie’s perfectly arched brows to go with a smokey eyes. Brett shares, “I used Brett Brow Laser Brow Pencil behind her hairs in an etching motion to delicately bring her arches front and center. Laser Brow is a cool toned taupe that adds the most natural definition around. I then ice with Brett Brow’s clear Arch-Control Gel. I brush brow hairs up and out for the fullest, feathery-ish look.”
LATRICE JOHNSON USES URBAN RX FOR REGINA KING
Regina King is a tour de force in this year’s Golden Globes. As one of three female nominees in a male dominated category, Best Director, King stepped into the virtual event in full Louis Vuitton armor. The couture gown, which took over 300 hours to make, was a statement that conveyed empowerment.
The tricky thing about power dressing ala King is that you have to create a sense of balance where hair and makeup are concerned. To much intensity may look costume-y and an overdose sweetness will just feel out of place. Latrice Johnson, King’s makeup artist that night decided to focus on radiant skin, complimenting the nominee’s strong fashion statement. She shares, “The skincare regimen I used was perfect in creating a fresh canvas by removing any imperfections and revealing a smooth, hydrated and radiant complexion that glowed.”
Latrice worked with URBAN SKIN RX range of skincare products, including the Even Tone Cleansing Bar and Even Tone Resurfacing Peel Pads, which aided in creating flawless skin. For a bright eyed finish, she used Vitaleyez Retinol + Vitamin C Complex around the eye area. King’s “glow from within” was achieved with a layer of HydraBalance Instant Moisture Infusion followed by the new Reti Glow Gentle Resurfacing Night Oil. “I mixed the night oil with Regina’s foundation,” revealed Latrice.
JENNIFER YEPEZ USING UNITE FOR SALMA HAYEK
Salma Hayek is always a sight to behold on the red carpet. Even during a virtual awards season, the two-time nominee turned heads in a cherry red Alexander McQueen asymmetric gown, Harry Winston sparkle and soft Hollywood locks.
Her hair stylist, Jennifer Yepez reveals: “The dress was so sexy and light so we thought the hair should match that vibe. Fresh, soft, sexy and young was what we went for.” She began by applying UNITE 7Seconds Detangler on Salma’s damp hair to hydrate her beautiful locks. This was followed by cult favorite, U Oil. This hair miracle is a multi tasking Argan hair serum to smoothen frizz and fly-aways. It also helps reduce blow drying time.
To create volume, Jennifer applied BOOSTA Volumizing Spray. She advices, “Start your blow dry with a medium round brush. I like to start making my clean sections at the nape and work my way up. Once you have blow dried all of the hair nice and sleek, I make my sections once again starting at the nape and clipping up the hair. I like to use a 1 ¾ curling iron and take about 1- inch sections and wrap the hair around the curling iron starting at the root and leaving the ends out.”
She adds, “The key is to wrap one section going downwards and the following section upwards. When you are framing the face, you want to wave one section downwards and then wave the following section away from the face. Once you’re done waving all of the hair, I take a large tooth comb and I comb all of the hair. Do not brush the hair as that will give a different look.” To seal in the soft curls, finish with 7SECONDS Glossing Spray.
RICHARD MARIN USES MATRIX FOR RENEE ZELLWEGER
Renee Zellweger consistently serves up timeless red carpet glamour. This holds especially true when she wears Armani Prive. These two, when combined, can never seem to do wrong. Despite the awards happening virtually in 2021, the four-time Golden Globe winner did not disappoint. A black couture sweetheart stunner from Armani Prive was every bit Old Hollywood, made modern by Richard Marin’s side swept waves.
He began by prepping newly washed hair with MATRIX Miracle Creator Multi Tasking Treatment to protect hair from heat and boost shine. He then created volume by applying MATRIX High Amplify Foam Volumizer, blow drying hair upside down for maximum volume. For an effortless and easy finish, he locked in with MATRIX Total Results Miss Mess Dry Finishing Spray. Richard explains: “We thought it was a perfect time to go for a new look, mixed with something classic. Life is looking optimistic again. Re-enter the world with a new fab haircut.”
MARA ROSZAK USES MATRIX FOR SHIRA HAAS
Shira Haas is one of those actresses whose presence on the screen is magnetic. The girl knows how to draw in a crowd. Whether she is playing the role of a young woman in a Hasidic community (a role that got her nominated for this year’s Golden Globes) or hopping onto a virtual awards season in a timeless Chanel LBD, Shira commands attention.
Hair stylist Mara Roszak creates a beauty look that’s young and modern with a side part and low bun. The stylist details: “I knew I wanted to put shiras hair up off of her face and shoulders so show of the clean simplicity of the dress silhouette, also she happens to look super gorgeous with her hair up! To modernize the look a bit, and keep it from looking too sophisticated, the back was undone with pieces naturally creating texture and movement.” She began by blow drying hair with a medium round brush. Mara followed with a spritz of MATRIX High Amplify Dry Shampoo to create soft texture then tied hair into low ponytail. Shira’s bun was decidedly loose and easy, held in place with an extra layers of Matrix StyleLink Shape Switcher Molding Paste. Using this product also creates a sublime satin finish.
SABRINA BEDRANI USING KAT BURKI FOR GAL GADOT
Gal Gadot is one of the most beautiful faces to grace the screen. When she took on the role of a lifetime as DC superhero, Wonder Woman, girls between the ages 8 to 80 wanted to become her. This year, the sashayed into the Golden Globes in an immaculate white Givenchy cape dress, Tiffany & Co jewelry, a baby bump and glowing skin.
Her makeup artist, Sabrina Bedrani, discloses: “Gal is wearing a beautiful short white dress by Givenchy, with a cape. So as a team we decided to go for a bold, chic, Hollywood look with fresh dewy, glowing skin.” To achieve this, they prepped the expectant mother’s skin with KAT BURKI’s Super Nutrient Elixir. She followed this with PH+ Enzyme Essence and Vitamin C Intensive Face Cream.
Sabrina worked on Gal’s makeup using Dior cosmetics. To create superhero glowing skin, she began with Dior’s Forever Skin Glow Foundation and Forever Skin Correct, both in 3W. Luscious lips were enhanced using Dior Lip Contour Celeste and Rouge Dior in 884.
